The first Friday of June (that’s today!) is National Donut Day. This celebration of the sweet, ring-shaped fried dough was started as a way to boost the morale of soldiers during World War I. At the time, the Salvation Army offered service members doughnuts and coffee in an effort to raise awareness of the war as well as to raise funds for the organization’s work on the battlefield.
Whether you like your donuts plain, glazed, frosted or filled with jelly, there is something for everyone this National Donut Day. Here are some special donuts, and even some freebies, that you can find across Central Florida.
Dunkin’
Guests receive a free classic donut of their choice with the purchase of any beverage. The flavors include: Boston kreme, glazed, glazed chocolate, jelly filled, etc.
Krispy Kreme
One free doughnut of choice for National Donut Day in addition to another free original glazed doughnut for those who have received a COVID vaccination. There is also a $1 original glazed dozen available with any purchase of a dozen!
Salty Donut
There is an exclusive French toast donut that is only available for National Donut Day for $4.25. In addition, all merchandise will be 40% off.
Duck Donuts
One free donut available at Duck Donuts for National Donut Day. Flavors include: cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar and bare.
DG Doughnuts
There will be a big inventory of extra donuts and selections available for purchase. This week’s specialty flavors include Peanut Butter Banger, which is topped with Reese’s Pieces candy and chopped peanuts; Strawberry Fields, filled with chopped strawberry filling, dipped in strawberry icing and garnished with turbinado sugar, rainbow sprinkles and a fresh sliced strawberry; and, for today only, Butterfinger Blast, complete with vanilla icing, chopped Butterfinger candy, cheesecake bites, mini chocolate chips, graham cracker and dark chocolate.
The Glass Knife
There is a donut box available for purchase at The Glass Knife that consists of six assorted donuts. The box consists of birthday cake (a flavor that will only be available today), glazed, pink sprinkle, creme brulee, apple fritter and vanilla cake.
