Orange County pet owners have a fresh opportunity to protect their furry companions—at no cost. Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is hosting two upcoming “Arm Your Pet” events aimed at providing essential vaccinations and microchipping for up to 650 cats and dogs.

These free clinics come in response to overwhelming demand at the shelter’s previous events, where more than 400 pets received critical care. As pet ownership continues to rise, OCAS is stepping in to support local residents by making preventive care accessible and affordable.

Why Microchipping and Vaccination Matter

“The interest in these events was overwhelming, which indicates there is a real need for these services that can be a financial burden on pet owners,” OCAS Manager Diane Summers said.

Increased shelter intakes, especially of unvaccinated animals, have prompted concern. “We’ve seen more dogs, particularly puppies, arriving with Parvovirus—a highly contagious and often fatal disease. Our goal is to provide preventative care for up to 500 dogs and 150 cats, helping reduce the spread of illness in our community.”

Microchipping plays a vital role in reuniting lost pets with their owners. Research from the American Veterinary Medical Association shows that 52% of microchipped dogs brought into shelters were returned home, compared to just 22% of those without a chip.
