Disney’s Hollywood Studios is preparing to welcome back a beloved experience as it returns to its animation roots. Set to open in 2026, “The Magic of Disney Animation” will reclaim its original space inside the Animation Courtyard, currently occupied by Star Wars: Launch Bay. The reimagined attraction is inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, and the Emmy Award-winning short film Once Upon a Studio. According to Disney, the experience will invite guests into a whimsical version of the animation studio where, in the absence of animators, Disney characters spring to life.

At the entrance, guests will be greeted by Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat, setting the stage for a magical journey through various studio departments. Inside, visitors can explore areas such as the Production Gallery, where animated portraits come to life just like in Once Upon a Studio, and the Screening Theater, which will showcase an uplifting short film for families. The attraction will also include hands-on experiences, such as an animation academy where guests can learn to draw classic Disney characters and enjoy in-person character meet-and-greets.

Families with young children will find added entertainment in “Drawn to Wonderland,” a brand-new indoor playground inspired by Mary Blair’s concept art for Alice in Wonderland. This imaginative play area will feature a whimsical oversized flower garden with interactive musical elements, a miniature Mad Tea Party set, and an exploration zone modeled after the Tulgey Wood. The entire space is designed to offer a playful, air-conditioned retreat for kids and their families.

Outside, Animation Courtyard will undergo a major transformation into “The Walt Disney Studios,” a reimagined outdoor space featuring shaded seating, lush landscaping, and charming surprises. Concept art reveals a cohesive studio-themed aesthetic, though notably, the iconic Animation Courtyard archway does not appear in the new renderings—suggesting it may be removed as part of the redesign.

In preparation for the renovation, Star Wars: Launch Bay, Disney Junior Play and Dance!, and the existing Animation Courtyard area will close beginning September 25, 2025. However, guests can continue to enjoy “Walt Disney Presents” and “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” during construction. The reopening of “The Magic of Disney Animation” is the latest change at Hollywood Studios, aligning with Disney’s continued strategy of blending nostalgia with new, interactive experiences that appeal to both longtime fans and first-time visitors.

Originally opened in 1989, the first version of The Magic of Disney Animation offered guests a behind-the-scenes look at how animated films were made. It also served as a working studio where parts of Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, and other animated features were produced. The attraction closed in 2015 to make room for Star Wars: Launch Bay. Its return in 2026 marks a renewed focus on storytelling, imagination, and honoring the legacy of Disney animation.
