Members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) Board and Orlando International Airport (MCO) have collaborated to bring a space to get away from the stress and hustle and bustle of MCO. Annie’s Space Sensory Room was announced on Friday and serves as an area for travelers with “sensory sensitivities” and their families to leave the sensory overload that can be the Orlando airport.
Designed with interactive bubble tubes and tactile panels, the space-themed room offers calmness and escape for neurodiverse and neurotypical passengers.
“At MCO, we believe every passenger deserves a smooth and welcoming journey,” Lance Lyttle, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, which manages Orlando International Airport, said in a press release. “Annie’s Space is more than just a room; it is a reflection of our commitment to innovation and care for our passengers and their families.”
Annie the Astronaut, MCO’s mascot, invites travelers to indulge in a sensory-friendly space with a moon cave, rocket sculpture and planets.
Annie’s Space is a Snoezelen® Multi-Sensory Environment and is custom-designed to bring benefits such as reducing anxiety, increasing awareness and attention and improved mood and behavior, as mentioned in a press release.
“Annie’s Space brings innovation and heart together in a truly meaningful way,” Tim Weisheyer, GOAA Board Chairman said. “By combining evidence-based design with immersive, space-themed elements, we’ve created a calming experience that reflects our dedication to the people-first mission. This project sets a new standard for how we can elevate accessibility through creativity and care.”
Opening this room continues the airport’s efforts to become a welcoming environment. In April 2024, MCO became a Certified Autism Center, meaning 80 percent of MCO’s staff underwent autism and neurodiversity sensitivity training, allowing them to better support travelers with disabilities and sensory needs.
Annie’s Space Sensory Room is in Terminal A, Level 3 near the Food Court. The space is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9p.m..
