Brandy Melville Opens First Orlando Store in Winter Park: Inside the Brand’s History

On Saturday, April 4, Brandy Melville store quietly opened in Winter Park, marking the brand’s first location in the Orlando area and only its fifth in Florida. Until now, shoppers in Central Florida had to travel to its South Florida locations in Miami, Miami Beach, Delray Beach, or Naples.

The low-key opening is characteristic of Brandy Melville’s usual retail strategy. The brand is known for having minimal promotion and soft launches, often relying on social media and word-of-mouth rather than traditional advertising.

The brand was founded in Italy in the early 1980s by Silvio Marsan and later expanded into the U.S. by his son, Stephan Marsan. Brandy Melville built its identity around a relaxed, “California casual” aesthetic featuring basics like cropped tees, oversized sweatshirts, and simple dresses. Its first U.S. store opened near UCLA in 2009, helping spark the rapid growth among teenage and college-aged shoppers. Today, the company operates dozens of U.S. locations and more than 100 stores globally.

Part of the brand’s appeal lies in its intentionally simple retail experience. Stores are typically designed with a laid-back, beach-inspired feel with neutral tones, wooden fixtures, and tightly curated racks of clothing. The products reflected this as well through limited color palettes and consistent silhouettes.

However, another aspect of Brandy’s influence and controversy is its “one size fits most” approach. Most items are produced in a single size, generally catering to small body types. The company has also faced scrutiny in recent years over negative workplace culture, as highlighted in the media and the HBO documentary, Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion.

Despite that, demand remains strong, particularly among Gen Z consumers. The brand seems to continue expanding in high-traffic retail districts, making Winter Park a natural fit. With lines going down the street on Saturday, customers seem interested in a brand that has built its identity as much on exclusivity and mystery as on its minimalist clothing style.
