When it comes to ringing in the new year, Times Square may be iconic, but it’s also notoriously expensive. From steep hotel rates to inflated food and drink prices, celebrating New Year’s Eve in major tourist hubs can quickly drain your budget. Fortunately for Central Florida residents and visitors alike, a new national study shows you don’t have to sacrifice fun—or affordability—to welcome the new year.
According to a recent WalletHub analysis comparing the 100 largest U.S. cities, Orlando ranks No. 1 overall as the best city in the country to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
How the Rankings Were Determined
WalletHub evaluated cities using 26 key metrics designed to measure the quality of a New Year’s Eve celebration. These factors include entertainment and nightlife options per capita, food affordability, safety and accessibility, fireworks legality, weather forecasts for December 31, and hotel costs during the holiday. The goal: identify cities that balance excitement with value.
Orlando Named the Best City for New Year’s Eve
Orlando earned a total score of 72.05, the highest in the study, placing it ahead of traditionally flashy destinations like Las Vegas and New York City.
The city ranked No. 1 for entertainment and food, reflecting its vast selection of theme parks, nightlife venues, restaurants, and attractions. While Orlando placed mid-pack for costs and safety, it stood out for offering plenty of festive options without the extreme price hikes seen in other major cities.
WalletHub highlights Orlando’s versatility as a major advantage. Whether celebrating at home, in a hotel, or at world-famous theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, the city offers experiences for every type of New Year’s Eve reveler.
Fireworks also play a key role. Orlando features organized public displays with solid duration, and consumer fireworks are legal in Florida, allowing residents to create their own celebrations where permitted.
Affordable Stays and Shopping-Friendly Fun
Despite its popularity, Orlando remains relatively affordable during the holiday. The lowest price for a three-star hotel room on New Year’s Eve was listed at $66, making it one of the more budget-friendly major destinations in the U.S.
Shopping enthusiasts also benefit, with Orlando ranking high nationally for the number of jewelry stores and gourmet food shops per capita—ideal for last-minute gifts or celebratory splurges.
How Orlando Compares Nationally
Rounding out the top five cities for New Year’s Eve were:
Orlando, FL
Las Vegas, NV
New York, NY
Seattle, WA
Los Angeles, CA
While Las Vegas and New York are known for large-scale celebrations and nightlife, both scored lower due to higher costs. New York, for example, ranked last overall in affordability.
Other Florida cities also performed well, with Miami (No. 10), Tampa (No. 12), Jacksonville (No. 45) and St. Petersburg (No. 63) appearing in the top half of the rankings.
A Smart Choice for Ringing in the New Year
WalletHub’s findings reinforce what many Central Floridians already know: Orlando offers a rare mix of world-class entertainment, festive atmosphere, and relative affordability. For those looking to avoid skyrocketing prices while still enjoying a memorable New Year’s Eve, Orlando stands out as the country’s best place to count down to midnight.
