On Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m., Horror-lando hosted a free Valentine’s edition screening of “Bride of Chucky” at BookBurn Cafe.
Guests were encouraged to arrive early to enjoy a pre-show hangout beginning at 7:30 p.m., featuring board games, drinks, and Child Play series trivia.
With the love of horror fans and Valentine’s Day, it is a sweet environment for guests to enjoy each other’s company.
Each movie shown at BookBurn Cafe stays horror but relates to different types of holidays that happen on the third Tuesday of each month.
Scary Events for the Public
“I help with public relations for Horror-Lando and a good way to get people to show up and get to see us is through press releases,” said Peyton Reese, volunteer for horror-lando.” We do this event every month and usually on the third Tuesday, so people can always look to see us on that date.”
Working to make Horror-lando a forever place, Reese said that solidifying the work this group has done with Book Burn was an important step in solidifying this group.
“We have just been trying to spread the word through socials and working with Book Burn to have a consistent schedule,” said Reese. “We want people to come bag out with us, so we’ve been trying to solidify our foundation in the Orlando area and make sure people know who we are, what we’re providing, and we have a positive community here.”
With the opportunity to make new connections, Reese said that is what makes these horror events worth it.
“I think meeting new people is the best part about these movie events,” said Reese. “I think that at every one of these, we’ve had new faces and people I’ve never met before. I think as adults it can be kind of hard to meet new people and make friends.”
“We’re just going to be doing more themed movie events where March is leaning towards Saint Patrick Day. The original 1993 movie ‘Leprechaun.’ will be playing and features the main character played by Jennifer Aniston,” said Marcel Urena, guest co-founder of Horror-lando.
Pushing towards a bigger audience, Urena said the Horror-lando group is working towards sponsorship and the opportunity to get outside of the cafe for more horror-filled adventures.
“We are trying to maybe get sponsorships whether it’s with atomic horror or some other kind of horror themed business here in Orlando,” said Urena. “Maybe collaborate and go to horror conventions like Scaradise in Tampa or Spooky Empire here in Orlando.”
“The best part about these events is being able to show movies we love to people who may not have seen these movies,” said Urena. “They don’t have to watch it alone in their house but can react out loud with friends in a comfortable nonjudgmental setting.”
