On Thursday, April 23 at 11 a.m., OIC Inspired had the grand opening of its expanded HiS health center. This introduced an in-house pharmacy, a laboratory, and a new clinic that is focused on preventative care for men’s health.

The organization honored the legacy of the Orlando Immunology Center, which has served the community for more than three decades and helped with work in infectious disease care and research.

This clinic itself already serves 5,000 to 6,000 patients, and the integrated model has treatment, testing, and pharmacy services. The expansion is designed to support existing patients and to create more efficient treatment and opportunity for those across Central Florida.

OIC Inspired also offers on-demand HIV and STI testing for the Orlando community, including individuals who are not current patients. Research shows that when testing and treatment occur at different locations, between 20% to 60% of patients may not return for treatment and results.

With this nonprofit health care organization expanding access to patient-centered care across Central Florida, men can receive a better understanding of treatment plans and its importance. Another tip is to get tested every three months to keep yourself and your partner safe.

The OIC Inspired Center offers screenings, education, and wellness services in a comfortable, welcoming setting, addressing men’s health concerns that may not be present in a traditional doctor’s office.

“Truth be told, men are least likely to actually approach doctors and providers regarding certain healthcare needs,” said Phillip Maxwell, Physician Assistant at OIC Inspired. “The goal of HiS is to actually take those patients in, establish a relationship and talk to men about sensitive topics that may be a bit difficult for general practitioners, but we are here to cater towards men’s health and needs.”

Having the right doctors and nurses to make men feel comfortable enough to get tested is what OIC Inspired is all about. It has been proven that men do not get checked regularly for sexually transmitted diseases regardless of symptoms that may arise due to anxiety and being terrified of results.

“Knowledge is key and there is nothing to be ashamed of here because this is a judgement-free and welcoming zone,” said Maxwell. “If anything comes up or arises, please come in and feel free to see us. We always encourage those to come in and get tested because testing, treatment, and knowledge are the key focal points to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.”

It is important to get regularly tested as a way to prevent the spread of incurable STDs.

“First and foremost, you’re going to stop the spread of any type of STDs to any sexual partner and sexual health is a part of anyone’s whole health,” said Maxwell. “Sometimes you might meet some stigma at certain locations depending on providers, but we want you to be as open and as honest as possible. Your needs are our needs and whatever you feel comfortable talking about, we’re here to listen and help.”

“I think OIC Inspired is a great factor for men having a health center catered to them which is designed with men’s health concerns in mind,” said Tombs. “Also, at OIC Inspired, we do Sexual Wellness for all and it’s all about the environment and the people you interact with. At OIC Inspired and the HiS healthcare clinic, sexual wellness is our thing, and we do it every day all day. We approach conversations concerning sex the same way we approach conversations which are out and about in general, and I think that comes a long way when talking about something so personal.”

This event collectively brought together different patients living with HIV and the treatment they received at OIC Inspired has helped them to continue to get treatment and stay healthy.
