For Dorcus “Pearl” Mullings, that lifestyle has been a key part of enhancing this second chapter. Originally from Jamaica, Pearl moved to New York in the 1970s, where she spent most of her career as a nurse-midwife and intensive care nurse.
After retiring to Georgia and later relocating to Central Florida following the loss of her husband, she knew one thing for certain: she didn’t want to feel isolated.
“I like to do things, and I like to be around people,” said Pearl. “That’s very important to me.”
What is active adult living?
Active adult living is designed for independent adults ages 55 and older who don’t need daily medical care but want a more convenient and engaging lifestyle. Unlike assisted living, it focuses on independence, social connection, and maintenance-free living.
“If you are an active person, then you need to be in a 55+ community,” said Pearl. “You still feel young.”

Before coming to Monterey Pointe, Pearl experienced firsthand what happens when that connection is missing.
“I was very, very unhappy in the community I was living in. It was so isolated,” she said of her previous living situation. “That was not part of my final life.”
That search for something more engaging ultimately led her to the Album Monterey Pointe, where she was drawn in by its garden club.
“I was so excited because I am very active; I like the outdoors. And I decided to apply at that very moment at 2 o’clock in the morning,” Pearl said. “I came. I met the staff, and it was so great that I knew that was home for me.”
What does daily life look like?

Debbie Haggard, a former resident who lived in the community for four years, still returns regularly to volunteer and stay connected.
“There was always something happening every day,” Debbie said. “It kept life fun.”

For Pearl, moving to the Orlando area meant being closer to loved ones, but finding the right community made all the difference in turning that move into a positive experience.

For Pearl, that feeling started right away.
“The people are friendly, and we stay together as a family,” Pearl said. “The staff is just excellent; they make you feel like you’re at home, and they make you feel a part of them just like how we make them feel a part of us.”
That same sense of connection is what keeps Debbie coming back, even after moving out.
“It’s a wonderful way to see friends and stay in touch,” she said. “It’s been a blessing to be part of a community where I can give back.”
