Leadership at Space Launch Delta 45, the U.S. Space Force unit overseeing launch operations on Florida’s Space Coast, has officially changed hands.
On June 26, Brig. Gen. Kristin Panzenhagen transferred command responsibilities to Col. Brian Chatman during a traditional change of command ceremony. The event, held under the oversight of Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, head of Space Systems Command, marked a symbolic passing of the guidon at Patrick Space Force Base.
Panzenhagen assumed command in June 2023, succeeding Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy, who oversaw the transition of Patrick and Cape Canaveral from Air Force to Space Force control. Her tenure included oversight of two record-setting years for launches: 72 missions in 2023 and 93 in 2024. So far in 2025, the Space Coast has hosted 58 launches as of July 2, with the region on pace to surpass 100 before year’s end.
In addition to leading Space Launch Delta 45 and the Eastern Range, Panzenhagen served as executive officer for the Assured Access to Space program and director of launch and range operations for Space Systems Command. Her next assignment has not yet been announced.
Incoming commander Col. Brian Chatman brings extensive experience to the role. Most recently, he served as deputy director for the Space Systems Engineering Directorate under the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. His prior assignments include roles with the National Reconnaissance Office, Space Systems Center, and the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, where he managed a $1.2 billion portfolio of classified programs.
Chatman also previously served as deputy commander of the 30th Operations Group at Vandenberg Air Force Base, overseeing space launch operations on the Western Range.
The Space Force has not yet named a replacement for Panzenhagen’s role in the Assured Access to Space program.
