A Florida beach getaway might be closer than you think, especially when it comes to the drive from the airport to the sand.

New research from Mozio, a global ground transportation booking platform, ranks 11 Florida beach destinations among the world’s most accessible by road, with Key West earning the state’s and the nation’s highest spot.

The study analyzed 100 well-known beach destinations across the U.S. and around the world, comparing driving distance and estimated travel time from each destination’s primary commercial airport to a representative beach point.

The results put three Florida destinations in the global top 25 and seven in the top 50.

Key West Ranks No. 3

Key West was the standout Florida destination, ranking No. 3 worldwide and No. 1 in the U.S.

According to the study, the representative beach point is just 1.8 miles from Key West International Airport, with an estimated drive of about six minutes.

Only Cozumel, Mexico, and Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, ranked higher among the study’s drivable destinations.

11 Florida Destinations Made the List

Key West wasn’t the only Florida destination to score well. 11 Florida beach destinations appeared in the study, including seven that landed in the global top 50.

Here’s how Florida destinations ranked globally:

  • Key West – No. 3: 1.8 miles; approximately 6 minutes from Key West International Airport
  • Daytona Beach – No. 15: 4.2 miles; approximately 13 minutes from Daytona Beach International Airport
  • Fort Lauderdale – No. 21: 5.8 miles; approximately 17 minutes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
  • Panama City Beach – No. 34: 12.3 miles; approximately 18 minutes from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport
  • Miami Beach – No. 41: 12.3 miles; approximately 23 minutes from Miami International Airport
  • Pensacola Beach – No. 45: 12.5 miles; approximately 25 minutes from Pensacola International Airport
  • Siesta Key – No. 50: 10.7 miles; approximately 28 minutes from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport
  • Destin – No. 56: 17.2 miles; approximately 31 minutes from Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport
  • Clearwater Beach – No. 65: 19.9 miles; approximately 40 minutes from Tampa International Airport
  • Naples – No. 74: 34.3 miles; approximately 42 minutes from Southwest Florida International Airport
  • Sanibel Island – No. 76: 29.4 miles; approximately 50 minutes from Southwest Florida International Airport

While all 11 made the study’s overall ranking, the travel times show a significant difference between destinations. A traveler heading to Key West could reach the beach in about six minutes, while someone traveling to Sanibel Island could face a transfer of approximately 50 minutes.

The remaining Florida destinations include Destin, Clearwater Beach, Naples and Sanibel Island, which ranked between Nos. 56 and 76, with Sanibel Island recording the longest estimated airport-to-beach drive among the Florida locations at about 50 minutes.

What Makes a Beach Destination “Accessible”?

For this study, accessibility refers specifically to the ground transfer after landing, not overall travel convenience.

Mozio used Google driving times and distances between each destination’s primary commercial gateway and a representative beach point. The 97 destinations that could be reached by road received an accessibility score weighted 60% toward travel time and 40% toward distance.

The ranking does not consider flight availability, airfare, or how convenient it is to reach the airport in the first place.

That distinction is important: the study isn’t declaring one beach better than another. Instead, it looks at one very specific part of the vacation: how long it takes to go from the airport to the beach.

Compared to the Rest of the World

Florida’s strong showing puts several familiar destinations alongside some of the world’s biggest beach vacation spots.

The global top 10 included Cozumel, Sharm El Sheikh, Key West, George Town in the Cayman Islands, Mallorca, Corfu, Montego Bay, Charlotte Amalie, Mykonos, and San Diego.

At the opposite end of the ranking, some destinations require significantly longer ground transfers. The least accessible drivable destinations included the Outer Banks, Rehoboth Beach, the Hamptons, Cape Cod, and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

For Florida travelers, the takeaway is fairly simple: you don’t always have to spend an hour in a car before your beach vacation actually begins.

In places like Key West, Daytona Beach, and Fort Lauderdale, the sand can be just minutes from the airport, giving travelers more time to spend where they came to be: at the beach.
