In a unanimous decision, Orange County commissioners approved a $500,000 contribution toward a $6 million study aimed at expanding SunRail as part of the Sunshine Corridor project. This initiative has garnered support from neighboring Osceola and Seminole counties, alongside a significant $2 million commitment from Universal Orlando.

Enhancing Connectivity in Central Florida

The Sunshine Corridor project is designed to improve regional transportation by linking SunRail to key destinations, including Orlando International Airport, International Drive, and Disney Springs. With growing demand for efficient public transit, this expansion is expected to enhance accessibility and alleviate congestion in one of Florida’s busiest areas.

Universal’s Role in the Expansion

In alignment with its investment in the upcoming Epic Universe theme park, Universal Orlando has earmarked land for a potential SunRail station should the project proceed. This contribution underscores the private sector’s vested interest in bolstering Central Florida’s transit infrastructure.

Funding and Future Prospects

The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission is actively seeking financial backing for the project development and environmental study—key prerequisites for securing federal or state funding to initiate construction. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has also pledged $2 million to support the study, highlighting its confidence that the expansion will drive increased SunRail ridership.

As momentum builds, the Sunshine Corridor project represents a collaborative effort between public and private entities to reshape Central Florida’s transportation landscape, offering residents and visitors a more connected and efficient travel experience.
