Volusia County has named Miguel Aviles, a former U.S. Marine and captain in the county’s Division of Corrections, its first Veteran Employee of the Year. The recognition was announced Tuesday, Oct. 20, honoring Aviles for his military service, leadership, and continued commitment to helping the community.

Aviles served 22 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of first sergeant. His military honors include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and six Good Conduct Medals.

He has worked for Volusia County’s Division of Corrections for 17 years, where he serves as a captain. Throughout his county career, Aviles has been recognized for balancing strong leadership with compassion while maintaining safety and supporting his colleagues.

Service Extends Beyond the Workplace

In addition to his responsibilities with the Division of Corrections, Aviles volunteers as a firearms range coach, helping fellow Corrections employees develop their skills and gain additional training. He also contributes his time, knowledge, and personal resources to assist residents facing difficult circumstances.

Scott Olson, director of Volusia County Veterans Services, said Aviles has continued serving others long after his military career ended.

“Miguel spent 22 years serving his country, and he never stopped serving when he took off the uniform,” Olson said.

Olson also highlighted Aviles’ leadership by example and his willingness to use his abilities to support residents.

In recognition of his contributions, the Volusia County Council designated October 20 as “Miguel Aviles Day.”

Volusia County currently employs 236 veterans. The award highlights the contributions these employees make to county operations and the residents they serve.

Through his military background, leadership in corrections and volunteer efforts, Aviles exemplifies the continued role veterans play in strengthening their local communities.
