Jurassic World returns to Malta for filming of new movie

Jurassic Park

Malta is set to see the return of the Jurassic World franchise as it has been confirmed the new movie is scheduled to begin shooting in the country this summer.

The 2022 Jurassic World Dominion release was filmed in multiple areas of the small Mediterranean country, with locations such as Valletta, Vittoriosa, Mellieha, and Pembroke all used in 2020 to capture various scenes.

One of the iconic scenes of that release featured the capital city, Valletta, where we saw velociraptors leap over the city’s churches and chase the characters of the movie through its streets.

What do we already know about the new Jurassic World movie?

Not a lot of information has been released yet about what to expect from the new Jurassic World movie. There is an expectation that Scarlett Johansson will take on the lead role, while filming will begin this summer in Malta. It is believed a release of July 2025 is being targeted.

The Malta Film Studios has been booked out this summer by the film’s producers, with the months of July, August, and September being scheduled for their use. However, there isn’t any information about whether there will be any shoots taking place on location as of yet.

Indeed, the Malta Film Studios is capable of creating a variety of different scenes with varying purposes, as it has been built with several facilities. They include the ability to shoot underwater, without having to go out on location among many others.

Malta has played host to several big blockbuster films in recent memory, although this has perhaps been due to the incentives the government provides. They offer a deal of 40% cash back on nearly all expenses that are incurred during the filming process while in Malta. They have done this to try and encourage more tourism to the island, while also trying to make the destination a premier location for filming.

Will another Jurassic World film be a success?

Sometimes, there can be too much of a good thing. However, when it comes to the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises, there doesn’t appear to be too much slowing down.

The franchise has been able to expand significantly away from its initial film beginnings, with TV shows, comic books, video games, and even casino games now available based on the themes. If you take a quick look at the collection of games at Unibet’s casino in Canada, there are several titles based on this franchise, as well as many other blockbuster film-themed options, like two titles on Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), and Jumanji among others.

Of course, the iGaming industry and other markets have looked to capitalize on the success and popularity that the films based on the prehistoric beasts have endured, with their global figures in terms of revenues highlighting just how lucrative it has been.

Since its first instalment, which was released in 1993, the franchise is thought to have generated more than $6 billion in revenue. The following estimated gross revenues have been generated for each of the films:

  • Jurassic Park – $1.1 billion
  • The Lost World: Jurassic Park – $618.6 million
  • Jurassic Park III – $368.8 million
  • Jurassic World – $1.672 billion
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – $1.31 billion
  • Jurassic World Dominion – $1 billion

Given that the latest film in the franchise was considered a flop by some and was given mixed reviews but still generated more than $1 billion in revenue, it appears that there is still a market for these types of films.

Could Scarlett Johansson take it to new heights?

By introducing Johansson into the lead character position, the film could appeal to different audiences or take a new tangent thus taking the franchise to new levels.

We all appreciate her great actress talent, which has earned her many awards. She is not new to big-screen movies and has played different types of characters. As a regular actor in the role of the Black Widow in many Marvel films throughout the MCU, she is capable of handling anything that dinosaurs throw at her, in Malta or anywhere else in the world!

However, it looks as though we’ll have to wait a year or so before we see the final finished article.
