8 Ideas to Create Your Dream Backyard

Your backyard should be a complete part of your home, not just the patch of land your house happens to sit on. Everyone has a different idea of what their dream backyard would look like, but it’s hard to go wrong as long as you try a few things and make the most of the land you do have. Here are a few ideas that can work with all kinds of backyards, whether they’re large, small, or everything in between.

Tidy Your Lawn

If you have a lawn, you probably also have the job of having to mow that lawn. Depending on where you live and your preferences, you might end up mowing your lawn multiple times a week or even each day. This time all adds up, and a lot of people don’t actually enjoy mowing their lawn.

There are a few things that can help with this. Depending on how you like your garden to look, you could consider switching the lawn out for cover crops that don’t need to be cut down. These are often better for the environment and need a lot less maintenance, but they don’t have the same feel as a grass lawn.

You could also switch to artificial grass, which always stays the same length, needs minimal upkeep, and is great for playing sports on, but has the downside of being artificial. Some people don’t like how this looks, and it’s not the most eco-friendly option.

Finally, if you like a traditional lawn as it is, but don’t like cutting it all the time, you could keep the lawn and invest in a battery-powered lawn mower. A robotic mower automates the mowing for you, so you just need to set it and watch it work while enjoying your backyard.

Add Flower Beds

So, you’ve got a nice lawn or whatever else you wanted. But is your garden missing a splash of color?

Flower beds are a great way to add some more color and life to your backyard. You can create flower beds with a stony border for a neat yet natural look. Use mulch and sawdust to keep the soil moist and prevent unwelcome weeds from popping up along with your flowers.

You can also grow shrubs and perennials that are less fussy than some flowers, so they’ll grow and bloom throughout the year. Try to get flowers that bloom at different times of the year so you can enjoy them for longer, and make sure to research what flowers grow best in your area.

Add a Patio or Decking

As well as everything you grow in your garden, it’s a good idea to add some landscaping. A patio or decking is a great option that can add some different levels and visual interest to your garden. This sections the backyard out and creates even more variety, especially if you have a raised decking or patio.

Patios are good options for barbecues, because they’re naturally fireproof and incredibly hardwearing. Most patios are made from stone or tiles, which will last years with very little maintenance.

A decking is usually made with wood. They’re beautiful and blend well with pergolas, and they are also fairly hardwearing, but take a bit more care and attention. It’s a good idea to treat your decking every couple of years or so, so it lasts longer. You should also be very careful about grilling on decking, because sparks can easily cause a fire. Either find a fireproof place for your barbecue, or be ready with a bucket of water.

Garden Furniture and Lighting

The best thing about patios and decking is that it gives you a stable, flat space for garden furniture. You can enjoy your backyard more by sitting outside on chairs, benches, and recliners. You can get different options depending on your preferred style and needs.

If you want to eat outside a lot, for example, a picnic bench or a similar table and chair setup is perfect for entertaining a crowd. You can serve food and eat together outside.

Or, if you’re more interested in sunbathing, you can instead invest in patio loungers that allow you to lie down and relax, ideally with a good book.

As well as seating and tables, consider backyard lighting. This is great for warm summer evenings when the sun has gone down, but you still want to spend some time outside.

Walkways and Paths

If you’ve got a larger backyard and a lawn, you might want to consider adding some walkways or paths through your garden.

Even a simple stone or gravel path is better than nothing, as it provides a clear route to different parts of your backyard and protects your lawn from people wandering all over it. Paths can also look beautiful, adding a rustic, cottagey vibe to your backyard.

Add a Water Feature

One incredible way to quickly upgrade your backyard is by adding a water feature. This can be something as simple as a small pond for wild frogs and newts, something more decorative and ornamental like a fountain with running water, or something like a backyard koi pond that requires more care.

No matter what you choose, when adding a water feature, make sure you research how to properly look after it. If you have small children, you also need to think about the potential safety risk of water in your backyard and make sure they’re always supervised.

Grow Food at Home

If you have the time and you want a new hobby, gardening in your backyard is a great way to make it do more for your family. You can grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs, which can level up your cooking.

There’s nothing as satisfying as harvesting your own food and, even better, enjoying it in a good meal.

Garden Structures

Finally, make sure to add any garden sheds or other structures that can help you use your backyard to its fullest. This might be a greenhouse, a workshop, or even a garden room that you can use as an office, summer house, or gym.
