SeaWorld Reaches Major Milestone With More Than 43,000 Animal Rescues

SeaWorld has reached a significant conservation milestone, surpassing 43,000 animal rescues across its rescue operations in Florida, California, and Texas. Launched six decades ago, this achievement reinforces the need for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

The 43,000th rescue occurred earlier this month when SeaWorld Rescue teams in San Diego responded to a report of an orphaned California sea lion pup discovered on the back stairs of a beach horse in Carlsbad, California. The rescue operation also included six birds found in need of assistance.

After arriving at SeaWorld’s Rescue Center, the nearly one-year-old female sea lion pup was found to be extremely dehydrated and underweight. The animal care specialists began treatment, providing fluids and nutritional support while helping her learn to eat fish independently. The pup is now being monitored alongside other rescued sea lions.

SeaWorld’s rescue teams in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio operate around the clock, responding to wildlife emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Since the organization’s first rescue of a stranded Dall’s porpoise in 1965, SeaWorld has grown into one of the world’s largest marine animal rescue organizations.

Orlando’s Rescue Impact

SeaWorld Orlando remains a critical hub for marine animal rehabilitation, particularly for Florida’s manatee population. During the first months of 2026, the facility provided medical care and rehabilitation for 21 manatees, a baby dolphin, nearly 40 turtles and reptiles, and several birds.

One recent success story involved Melby, a manatee rescued from a storm drain in Melbourne Beach earlier this year. After months of rehabilitation and gaining more than 100 pounds, Melby was successfully released back into Florida waters in April.

As the largest manatee rescue operation in the United States, SeaWorld Orlando operates one of only five federally designated critical care centers for manatees. Its five-acre rescue facility can accommodate up to 60 manatees at a time.

“Rescue and rehabilitation can save the lives of individual animals, and in some cases support the preservation of endangered and threatened species, like the Florida manatee,” said Dr. Chris Dold, Chief Zoological Officer at United Parks & Resorts in a statement. “That is why we do this work, and why it is so important for accredited zoos and aquariums like ours to continue efforts to help animals that cannot survive on their own.”

SeaWorld says this milestone serves as a celebration of decades of conservation work but a reminder that the need for marine wildlife rescue remains as important as ever.
