Central Florida’s commuter rail system, SunRail, may soon expand its weekday schedule to include late-night service. Officials are weighing the addition of two evening trips between Poinciana and DeLand, aiming to increase ridership while keeping operating costs stable.
The proposal includes a northbound train departing Poinciana at 8:45 p.m. and arriving in DeLand at 10:26 p.m., and a southbound train leaving DeLand close to 10 p.m. with a scheduled arrival in Poinciana at 11:38 p.m. If approved, the change would raise the number of weekday trips from 40 to 42.
Transit leaders project the expanded schedule could attract about 2,000 more riders each month, generating an estimated $10,000 in additional revenue. The late-night service is intended to serve both traditional commuters and those traveling for evening events or leisure.
Currently, SunRail operates Monday through Friday, a limitation some passengers have voiced concerns about. While the proposed adjustment would extend weekday hours, many riders continue to advocate for weekend service.
The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission is expected to review the proposal at its next board meeting on September 25.
