Universal Orlando to Reopen Stardust Racers Ride Following Fatal Incident Review

Universal Orlando opened Stardust Racers roller coaster at its new Epic Universe theme park on Saturday, more than two weeks after a guest’s death prompted an extensive review of the attraction.

The reopening comes after Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained on the high-speed ride on September 17. The Orange County Medical Examiner ruled his death accidental, citing “multiple blunt impact injuries.” The full autopsy report has not yet been released.

Zavala, who was born with a spinal disability and used a wheelchair, died after riding the dual-launch coaster, which reaches speeds of up to 62 mph. Attorneys for his family said his disability did not cause his death.

In a memo to employees on Friday, Karen Irwin, president and chief operating officer of Universal Orlando Resort, said the company conducted a comprehensive operational and technical review of the ride. According to Irwin, the investigation confirmed that the coaster’s systems were functioning correctly and that park staff had followed all established safety procedures.

“The ride system’s manufacturer and an independent roller coaster engineering expert also performed on-site tests, which supported our findings,” Irwin wrote.

As part of the reopening process, Universal will update signage to emphasize safety warnings and eligibility requirements, helping guests make more informed decisions before boarding.

Zavala’s family had previously urged Universal to delay reopening Stardust Racers until all investigations were complete and they had more clarity about what led to his death.

The reopening of the ride marks a key moment for Epic Universe, Universal’s newest and most anticipated theme park expansion. The company reaffirmed its commitment to guest safety, stating that it will continue to “evaluate and enhance safety protocols where appropriate.”
