Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody Appointed to U.S. Senate Seat

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has been appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to fill Marco Rubio’s seat in the U.S. Senate. The announcement, made Thursday in Orlando, marks Moody as only the second woman to represent Florida in the chamber.

Career and Background

Ashley Moody began her career as a federal prosecutor before transitioning to the judiciary. In 2006, she was elected as a circuit judge in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa. A fifth-generation native of Plant City, Florida, Moody has deep ties to the state, including being crowned queen of the city’s Strawberry Festival.

Moody pursued her education at the University of Florida, earning three degrees in law, accounting, and a Master of Laws in international law. She is married to a law enforcement officer, and the couple has two sons.

Role as Attorney General

Moody was elected as Florida’s Attorney General in 2018, becoming the state’s top law enforcement officer. In this role, she focused on legal challenges involving state and federal policies. Notable cases included lawsuits concerning immigration enforcement, vaccine mandates for federal contractors, and student loan forgiveness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Moody advocated for the federal government to investigate the origins of the outbreak. She was also one of the state attorneys general who supported a lawsuit contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Appointment and Responsibilities

Governor DeSantis commended Moody’s experience and record, emphasizing her role in legal battles and policy enforcement. In her new position, Moody is expected to focus on federal issues such as immigration, inflation, and government oversight.

Moody stated her intent to begin working on legislative priorities immediately, including supporting the president’s agenda and addressing key national challenges.

Political Context

The Senate currently holds a narrow Republican majority of 52-47 following Vice President-elect JD Vance’s resignation. This slim margin increases the significance of party unity during upcoming confirmation hearings for Cabinet nominees.

Republican State Senator Joe Gruters, a supporter of the appointment, described Moody as a strong leader who has earned respect for her work in public service.

Implications for Florida

Moody’s appointment leaves a vacancy in Florida’s Cabinet, allowing Governor DeSantis to appoint a new Attorney General. Additionally, DeSantis will select a replacement for Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, who is running for an open congressional seat.

Ashley Moody’s transition to the U.S. Senate marks a new chapter in her career, with her focus shifting to federal legislative responsibilities. Her tenure as Florida’s Attorney General has highlighted her experience in law enforcement and legal advocacy, positioning her for the challenges of this new role.
