AAA projects that 72.2 million Americans will travel domestically during the Independence Day holiday period, which runs from Saturday, June 28 through Sunday, July 6. This marks a 2.4% increase over last year and a jump of 7 million travelers compared to 2019, making it the busiest July 4th travel season on record.
To reflect evolving travel patterns, AAA’s forecast now spans two full weekends, capturing longer getaways and staggered departure schedules.
Florida a Top Travel Draw
According to AAA’s booking data, Florida continues to dominate domestic travel demand. Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami all rank among the top 10 most popular U.S. destinations for the Independence Day period.
Orlando, FL remains the top destination nationwide, thanks to its world-renowned theme parks and holiday events.
Fort Lauderdale, FL appeals to beachgoers and cruise travelers heading to the Caribbean.
Miami, FL attracts visitors for its vibrant nightlife, coastal festivities, and family-friendly fireworks shows.
Cruises departing from Florida ports, resort stays, and large public firework displays are major draws during the extended holiday week.
Driving Expected to Break Records
More Americans than ever are expected to hit the road for the holiday. AAA forecasts that 61.6 million people will drive, a 2.2% increase over 2024. That’s 1.3 million more drivers than last year and the highest number ever recorded for the Independence Day holiday.
AAA is urging travelers to prepare their vehicles in advance. During last year’s holiday week, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 roadside assistance calls for common issues like dead batteries, flat tires, and empty gas tanks.
Florida Drivers Take Note:
Gas prices may fluctuate leading up to July 4th. Recent spikes in oil prices—partly in response to geopolitical tensions—have increased gasoline production costs. Whether prices stabilize in Florida before the holiday remains uncertain.
Air Travel Also Hits New Highs
This year’s holiday period is also setting records in the skies. AAA anticipates 5.84 million people will fly, a 1.4% increase over 2024. These figures represent domestic leisure travelers only and are based on completed round-trip bookings.
Round-trip domestic airfare is averaging $810, up 4% from last year. For travelers from Florida airports, midweek flights—especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays—offer the best chances for last-minute savings.
International Travel Trends
On the international side, Vancouver leads AAA’s top bookings for July 4th travel, followed by European cities such as Rome, Paris, and London. These destinations are popular for their summer climates, cultural attractions, and favorable exchange rates.
Best and Worst Times to Drive
Travelers driving in and out of Florida should plan around peak congestion times. INRIX, a transportation data firm, warns that Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6 will be the most congested travel days.
Travel Tips for Drivers:
Worst times: Afternoon to early evening
Best times: Early morning departures
Watch for: Construction zones, traffic crashes, and summer thunderstorms
Florida Shines in Independence Day Travel
With three cities on AAA’s top 10 list and record-breaking road and air travel expected, Florida remains a top destination for July 4th. Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead, monitor weather and traffic reports, and secure reservations early to avoid disruptions.
