SeaWorld Orlando is mourning the death of Katina, a beloved killer whale who had been part of the park for nearly four decades. The theme park announced Sunday night that Katina passed away at the age of 50 after a period of declining health.

According to SeaWorld, Katina had been experiencing age-related health challenges as she entered her geriatric years. The park shared the news in a statement and on social media, noting that her condition had worsened in recent weeks despite ongoing medical care.

“For many wonderful years, Katina awed and inspired millions of our guests to appreciate and learn more about this amazing species,” SeaWorld said in a statement. “This is an incredibly difficult time for those who knew and loved Katina.”

Katina was one of the most well-known killer whales at SeaWorld Orlando and had been living at the park for close to 40 years. During that time, she became familiar to generations of visitors and staff members, playing a significant role in animal presentations and educational experiences at the Central Florida theme park.

In a recent social media post, SeaWorld explained that Katina’s health had “begun to significantly decline as she entered her geriatric years.” Animal care and veterinary teams closely monitored her condition and adjusted her care as needed.

“Over the last several weeks, our animal care and medical teams have worked around the clock to closely monitor her declining health, and as her condition worsened, the decision was made to prioritize her comfort and welfare,” SeaWorld said on social media. “Despite everyone’s extraordinary efforts, she passed away while surrounded by animal care and medical teams who have worked closely with her for nearly 40 years.”

SeaWorld described Katina as having a big personality and noted that she was well known for sticking her tongue out, a behavior that endeared her to trainers and guests alike. Staff members who worked with her over the years remembered her as a distinctive presence within the park’s orca family.

The passing of Katina marks a significant moment for SeaWorld Orlando, where she had long been a central figure. The park did not announce plans for any public memorials but emphasized the impact Katina had on guests and employees throughout her life.

SeaWorld Orlando has faced increased public attention in recent years regarding the care of marine animals. In its statement, the park highlighted the efforts of its animal care and medical teams, underscoring their focus on Katina’s welfare during her final days.

Katina’s death is being felt deeply by those who worked closely with her and by visitors who came to know her over decades at one of Orlando’s most visited theme parks.
