Protests took place across Central Florida and around the country on Saturday as part of the “No Kings Day” demonstrations, a coordinated effort opposing federal immigration enforcement and perceived authoritarianism. The demonstrations were scheduled to coincide with a military parade in Washington, D.C., commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday.
Organized by the 50501 Movement — a group that describes itself as a national coalition advocating for democracy — the protests were held in cities including Apopka, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Leesburg, Mount Dora, Poinciana, Kissimmee, Clermont, and multiple sites across Orlando. Hundreds gathered in downtown Orlando near City Hall and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to voice concerns over what organizers called “authoritarian actions” by the Trump administration.
The movement’s name, 50501, represents “50 states, 50 protests, one movement,” reflecting the group’s mission to unify participants across the country under a common cause. Organizers say nearly 2,000 protests were scheduled worldwide, all aiming to redirect attention from the military celebration in Washington, D.C., and toward what they see as threats to democratic norms and civil liberties.
The protests also come amid heightened tensions around federal immigration policies. Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans criticizing immigration raids and broader enforcement measures, which they argue disproportionately affect immigrant communities and violate human rights.
This is not the first time the 50501 Movement has organized demonstrations. Earlier in the year, the group led protests opposing both Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Musk had been involved with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a now-defunct agency created during Trump’s administration to reduce federal spending. Protesters accused both figures of undermining democratic processes and likened Trump’s leadership style to that of a monarch.
The “No Kings Day” events remained largely peaceful and included speeches, music, and organized marches. Organizers emphasized the importance of civic engagement and urged attendees to register to vote and participate in upcoming elections.
As political tensions continue to rise, movements like 50501 say they plan to maintain pressure through continued activism and public demonstrations.
