The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has completed its preliminary investigation into what has been confirmed as the first recorded fatal black bear attack in Florida.
The incident, which claimed the life of 89-year-old Robert Markel, came to light on May 5 following a reported wildlife encounter in the remote Jerome area of Collier County. According to the FWC, family members had reported Markel missing from his home, where they noted signs of a recent disturbance consistent with bear activity.
Markel’s remains were later discovered approximately 100 yards from his residence. Nearby, investigators also found the remains of his dog. Physical evidence at the scene indicated a violent encounter with a black bear, leading officials to confirm the rare fatality.
Wild black bear attacks on humans are considered highly uncommon in Florida. While there have been documented incidents involving scratches or bites, such cases typically involve the presence of cubs, unsecured food, or domestic animals that may provoke defensive behavior.
FWC officials emphasized that while this marks a historic case in the state, human injuries from black bears remain exceedingly rare. The agency is continuing its investigation, with further testing and analysis pending. The case will remain open until all forensic and wildlife assessments are finalized.
