Florida’s minimum wage increased to $14 per hour on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, marking the latest step in a voter-approved plan to raise wages across the state gradually. Tipped employees will now earn a base wage of $10.98 per hour, in addition to tips.

The increase stems from Amendment 2, a constitutional change narrowly approved by Florida voters in 2020. The measure outlined a multi-year schedule of $1 annual increases until the minimum wage reaches $15 per hour on September 30, 2026. After that, the rate will once again be tied to inflation, as it was before the amendment’s passage.

Before the amendment, Florida’s minimum wage was $8.46 per hour, one of the lowest among large states.

Economic Impact and Debate

Supporters of the wage hikes argue the increases help workers keep pace with the cost of living, especially in fast-growing regions like Central and South Florida. Opponents, however, warned that higher labor costs could put pressure on small businesses, increase prices for families, and make it more challenging for younger workers to secure entry-level jobs.

That concern is reflected in Florida’s youth unemployment rate, which currently stands at 10.5% among workers ages 16 to 24.

How Florida Compares Nationally

While Florida is on track to reach $15 per hour in 2026, the state’s minimum wage still lags behind several others. As of 2025, Washington, D.C. leads at $17.95 per hour, followed by Washington state at $16.66, and California and New York at $16.50.

What Comes Next

The 2026 increase will be the final scheduled step under Amendment 2. Beginning in 2027, Florida’s minimum wage will again be adjusted annually for inflation, similar to the system in place since 2004.

For now, workers across Florida will see the effects of the new $14 minimum wage on their paychecks, while businesses continue to adapt to the higher labor costs ahead of the final bump to $15.
