In a move that has sparked widespread public debate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his intent to sign legislation that would implement a statewide ban on the addition of fluoride to public water supplies. The decision follows months of national discourse surrounding water fluoridation, a practice long used across the United States to promote dental health.
Governor DeSantis referred to the presence of fluoride in Florida’s water as “forced medication,” a characterization that reflects his broader stance on individual consent in public health measures. The proposed legislation, SB 700, would prohibit local governments from independently adding fluoride to municipal drinking water.
“Today I was in Miami to support SB 700, which bans local governments from unilaterally adding fluoride to public drinking water,” DeSantis stated on social media. “With wide access to topical fluoride, there’s no need to medicate entire communities without their consent. The Free State of Florida says no to forced medication, and we’re proud to lead the nation on this effort!”
The Florida Dental Association (FDA), however, has publicly voiced opposition to the ban. In a statement released following DeSantis’ announcement, the organization emphasized the scientific consensus surrounding water fluoridation.
“The Florida Dental Association strongly reinforces that fluoridation is a naturally occurring mineral, not a medication, that is already present in the water in many parts of the country, including Florida,” the statement read. “Scientific evidence consistently indicates that fluoridation of community water supplies is safe and effective at preventing and repairing tooth decay.”
While proponents of the bill argue it protects personal freedom and local autonomy, critics caution that eliminating fluoride from water systems could lead to increased rates of dental decay, particularly in underserved communities with limited access to dental care or topical fluoride treatments.
The legislation now awaits formal signature by Governor DeSantis, a step that would position Florida as one of the few states to take a decisive stance against water fluoridation at the state level.
