As Seminole County honors military service this Veterans Day, one local educator is being recognized for helping students explore careers in the armed forces and public safety.
Emelda Lovett, Lead Counselor at Seminole High School, received the 2025 Champion of Career Opportunities Award for her role launching Informed About the Uniform. This is a hands-on career program developed by Seminole County Public Schools’ ePathways department in partnership with the Seminole County Fire Department, Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and U.S. military branches.
The initiative began at Seminole High in 2022 and has since expanded to every high school in the district, giving students opportunities to meet firefighters, law enforcement officers, and military representatives. Students can ask questions and explore service-focused career paths.
Lovett was surprised by the recognition and a $100 Walmart gift card donated by Action Church. Earlier this year, her home was struck by lightning and caught fire, making the community support especially meaningful as she remains in temporary housing.
“There is a strong need for future first responders and public safety professionals,” said Sean Kurth, ePathways College & Career Specialist, in a press release. “This program ensures students are informed, inspired, and ready to take the next step toward meaningful careers.”
SCPS’s ePathways initiative aims to ensure students graduate with a clear plan for the future, connecting them to high-wage, high-demand careers.
