When people picture spending winter in Florida, they usually imagine a beach town somewhere along the Gulf Coast or a sunny South Florida community where the ocean is never far away. But a new national study suggests that some of Florida’s best places to spend the winter are actually inland.
According to a new StorageCafe analysis of 472 U.S. cities, Winter Haven is America’s best snowbird destination for the 2026–2027 season, followed closely by Lakeland in second place. Lake Wales also makes the national top 10, giving Polk County three of the country’s top 10 winter destinations.
Why Polk County works so well for snowbirds
Florida’s beaches will always be a major attraction, but spending an entire winter somewhere is different from taking a weeklong vacation. Once the stay stretches into several months, housing costs, groceries, healthcare, and everyday convenience become just as important as the weather.
Central Florida has a big advantage over coastal hotspots: affordability. Winter Haven, Lakeland and Lake Wales offer the mild winters that draw people south in the first place, but rental options are significantly less expensive than in many of Florida’s established coastal snowbird destinations. For someone paying for a second home for several months while maintaining a primary residence elsewhere, that difference can have a substantial impact on the winter budget.
However, affordability alone wouldn’t put these cities at the top of a national ranking. What makes Central Florida stand out is the combination of lower costs with the lifestyle snowbirds are looking for: pleasant weather, plenty of outdoor recreation, and a quieter pace of life, with larger cities and major attractions within easy reach.
Lakes, golf and a slower pace of life
One of the biggest differences between Polk County and Florida’s coastal snowbird hotspots is the setting. Instead of busy beachfront communities, Winter Haven offers its famous Chain of Lakes, with opportunities for boating, fishing, and enjoying the waterfront. The city also has eight golf courses, giving winter residents plenty of ways to spend time outdoors.
Lakeland offers a similar appeal on a somewhat larger scale. With 38 lakes, 12 golf courses, and an established downtown, it combines outdoor recreation with restaurants, shopping, and cultural activities. Lake Wales, meanwhile, offers a smaller-town experience and easy access to the area’s natural attractions. Across all three, the residential feel makes it easy to settle into a routine without living in the middle of a tourist destination.
Polk County also sits between the Tampa and Orlando metropolitan areas, putting major airports, entertainment, and shopping within reach. For snowbirds who enjoy an occasional trip to the beach or a day out in a larger city but prefer a calmer home base, that combination is very appealing.
Housing built for seasonal residents
These cities have the infrastructure to host a large influx of newcomers over the winter months. Snowbirds need housing that works for months rather than days, and established seasonal markets offer more furnished accommodations and communities accustomed to welcoming people who split their year between two homes.
In Winter Haven, nearly half of vacant homes are tied to seasonal living. Lakeland and Lake Wales also have a substantial seasonal housing component. Other Polk County communities rank well too: Haines City comes in 14th nationally, with a high share of housing used seasonally or occasionally, and Auburndale also makes the national top 25.
That’s what ultimately makes a good snowbird destination: a place where everyday life is enjoyable, comfortable, and affordable for several months at a time. For snowbirds who prefer lakes and golf courses to crowded beachfront communities, Polk County makes a pretty convincing case.
Making the two-home lifestyle easier
Finding the right destination is only part of the equation. Spending several months away from a primary residence also means figuring out how to manage two households.
For snowbirds returning to the same area every winter, keeping a basic set of belongings at their seasonal home can make life considerably easier. Instead of transporting golf equipment, outdoor gear, seasonal clothing, and household items back and forth every year, they can leave some of those things behind.
Self storage can be particularly useful when winter accommodations are rented rather than owned, which is the case for many if not most snowbirds. In Winter Haven, for example, self storage rents average around $110 per month, below the national average. Snowbirds planning to return to the area can search for self storage facilities in Winter Haven to find a convenient place to keep belongings they won’t need until the following winter.
Self storage services are widely available across Florida in general, making the two-home lifestyle a lot more convenient for snowbirds.
Florida dominates nationally, but Texas is close behind
Central Florida’s strong showing is part of a much bigger Florida success story. Of the 100 highest-ranking snowbird destinations in the StorageCafe study, 63 are in Florida. But even if Central Florida is more affordable than the state’s coast, there’s serious competition in Texas.
The Rio Grande Valley places four cities in the national top 10, including McAllen and Mission in third and fourth place, respectively. Brownsville and Harlingen also rank well. When the study separately ranked its 100 best snowbird destinations based on housing and grocery costs, all 10 of the most affordable cities were in Texas. For snowbirds more concerned with keeping the cost of a second home manageable than with beaches, South Texas is an attractive alternative.
Arizona also remains a popular choice for winter residents who prefer dry desert weather. Yuma, in particular, stands out for its warm winters, relatively affordable housing, and established seasonal community.
Still, Florida’s variety is hard to match. Snowbirds can choose between beaches, lakes, small towns and major cities without even leaving the state.
The findings are based on StorageCafe’s 2026–2027 ranking of America’s best snowbird destinations. The study evaluated 472 cities using climate, housing costs, seasonal housing, recreation, healthcare, safety, retail access, and other factors.
