Eight or Eighty: Why Retro Gaming Belongs to Everybody

A few years back, I figured retro gaming was mostly for people my age chasing a feeling from childhood. But working at GamersGoRetro, known locally as Gamers Inc Orlando, has shown me something I never expected. One day, we’ll have a nine-year-old at the counter asking if we’ve got Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo, while his grandpa browses the Atari shelf. Same store, same excitement, about sixty years apart.

I’m Anthony, the operations manager here, and after seeing moments like these firsthand, I’ve come to realize something: great games don’t have an expiration date!

Here’s what gets me: the youngest gamers are some of our biggest retro fans. Kids who grew up with massive open worlds, online lobbies, and constant updates are discovering that a cartridge you pop in and just play is just as fun and playable as the latest update on Fortnite. There’s no download, no battle pass, no waiting on a patch, and no microtransactions. You press the power button, and you’re in for an incredible adventure. For this “iPad kid” generation, that simplicity feels like a secret they’ve stumbled upon, and they can’t wait to show their friends.

The games themselves hold up. Retro titles were built with tight controls, clever level design, and a ton of personality, because developers had limited hardware and had to make every pixel count. The art styles, the chiptune soundtracks, and that “okay, one more try” difficulty are timeless. Parents get to share the games they grew up with; kids get to discover them fresh, and grandparents sometimes jump in with stories about the arcade days. It shows that N64 or NES games are not just for those who received them as Christmas gifts back in the day; they are for everyone curious enough to explore the vast catalogs of these console eras. Everybody ends up on the same couch with a controller in hand. No trailer or ad campaign can manufacture that.

Some of my favorite moments happen when a parent walks into our Orlando store with their child and suddenly spots a game they haven’t seen since they were ten years old. Within seconds, they’re explaining secret levels, favorite characters, and the games they used to play with their own siblings. The child came in looking for a game, but the parent ended up rediscovering a piece of their childhood. Those moments are a reminder that video games can be more than entertainment. They can be memories passed from one generation to the next.

We have been in the gaming business, working to preserve retro gaming for all to enjoy, for over 16 years. We’re proud to be Orlando’s highest-rated game store and Orlando’s longest-standing single-location retro shop of our kind. That doesn’t happen by accident. It is a result of our continued commitment to fair prices, honest testing, thorough refurbishment, and a team that actually cares for and plays what it sells. There is a rule in our operation: no dirty games. This means you can trust that we have gone to great lengths to remove those old pre-owned stickers from disc cases, erase Sharpie names from cartridges, and thoroughly clean that 30-year-old controller with a toothbrush. It’s the kind of attention to detail we’ve taken pride in for over 16 years, and it’s something we bring to every game that passes through our hands.

And those games don’t just stay on our shelves. Our online shop, GamersGoRetro.com, is stocked with pre-owned games and consoles spanning everything from Atari to current-generation systems. Whether you’re hunting for a childhood favorite, a hidden gem, or that next grail to fill the shelf, there’s a good chance it’s sitting in our catalog right now. Come see for yourself and view our inventory in full at the link above.

Over the years, we’ve also built an online following by sharing our passion for retro gaming with fun and relatable comedy, as well as showcasing some of the amazing games that come through our doors. We’re @gamersgoretro on Instagram, where our nostalgic skits and game showcases pull in millions of views every month. We goof around, show off cool finds, and celebrate the games that shaped us. The comment sections are my favorite part, full of people trading memories, tagging their siblings, and arguing (lovingly) about their opinions on the games they’re nostalgic for. It’s a community built on fun and celebrating the games that made us all gamers, and I’d love for you to be part of it.

Now, here’s something many don’t realize: we’re also buying. Every game and console in our store was purchased from someone like you reading this. If you’ve got a stack of games collecting dust in a closet, we purchase games both old and new, from classic cartridges to recent releases. Turning games you’re done with into cash is simple, and it keeps great titles in circulation for the next player to enjoy. Find out how it works on our sell page: https://www.gamersgoretro.com/pages/sell-video-games.

At the end of the day, retro gaming isn’t about age. It’s about fun. Whether you’re eight or eighty, there’s a game out there with your name on it. So, check out the shop, follow us on Instagram, and bring the whole family along.
