2026 MTV Video Music Awards: Records to be Broken

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards could be a milestone-filled night for some of music’s biggest names.

The VMAs take place Sunday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. ET, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air on CBS and MTV and stream on Paramount+, with Snoop Dogg serving as host.

Taylor Swift Makes VMA History

Taylor Swift is already guaranteed to make history before the competitive awards are announced. She will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors, bringing her career VMA total to 31 and making her the most-awarded artist in the show’s history. She enters the ceremony with nine nominations, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.

Swift is also nominated for Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.” A win would add another Video of the Year title to her collection.

Madonna Leads This Year’s Nominations

Madonna leads the 2026 nominations with 11 nods, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. A win would add to her career total and could further strengthen her place among the most-awarded artists in VMA history.

Her “Confessions II – The Film” is also nominated for Video of the Year, alongside Swift, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter and GENER8ION featuring Yung Lean.

Madonna will also perform at the ceremony, marking her first VMA performance in more than two decades.

Other Milestones to Watch

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each enter the ceremony with seven nominations, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson have five each.

The 2026 nominees also include several artists who could make history in their categories. The Song of the Year nominees include BTS, Ella Langley, HUNTR/X, Madonna, and Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress, and RAYE.

The Best K-Pop category also features BTS, Lisa, Blackpink, Le Sserafim and Katseye, while the Best Dance category returns to the VMAs lineup after a seven-year absence.

This year’s ceremony also features 26 first-time nominees, including K-pop group CORTIS and artists such as GENER8ION and Yung Lean.

With several longtime VMA winners returning alongside a large group of first-time nominees, the 2026 ceremony will be one to watch when the winners are announced Sept. 27.
