Orlando International Airport Plans Major Baggage Claim System Upgrade

Travelers at Orlando International Airport (MCO) often face lengthy wait times at baggage claim, a common source of frustration. However, relief may be on the way as the airport prepares for a significant upgrade to its baggage handling system.

$650 Million Investment to Modernize Operations

MCO is allocating more than $650 million to overhaul its baggage handling system. This project, part of a broader effort to improve the airport’s overall efficiency, aims to address challenges associated with increased passenger traffic over the years.

The current system, implemented shortly after 9/11, has struggled to keep pace with the airport’s growth. As Orlando continues to rank among the nation’s busiest travel destinations, the need for a modernized system has become critical.

Enhanced Technology and Customer Focus

The upgraded system will feature advanced technology designed to reduce delays and minimize issues such as misplaced luggage. These enhancements are expected to streamline operations and improve the overall passenger experience.

Additionally, the airport is placing a strong emphasis on customer service. Dan Giordano, recently appointed to the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) by Governor Ron DeSantis, brings a background in hospitality as vice president of corporate planning and development at Rosen Hotels. Giordano’s expertise is expected to contribute to creating a more traveler-friendly atmosphere.

Multi-Year Timeline for Completion

While the upgrades promise significant improvements, the project’s scale means it will take several years to complete. During this period, the airport will work to minimize disruptions for passengers.

To keep the public informed, MCO has launched a dedicated website, Elevating MCO, which provides updates on construction and other ongoing projects. This resource is designed to help travelers stay informed about the airport’s progress.

Long-Term Benefits for Passengers

The planned upgrades represent a major step forward for MCO in addressing longstanding challenges and improving the travel experience. Although the construction process may cause temporary inconveniences, the long-term results aim to benefit millions of travelers passing through the airport each year.
