As the aftermath of catastrophic flash flooding continues to unfold in Central Texas, Florida is joining the national effort to support recovery operations. The severe weather event, which struck the Texas Hill Country late last week, has left at least 81 people dead and 41 others missing, according to officials as of Sunday evening.

The flash floods, triggered by intense rainfall, caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly, reaching the height of a two-story building. Emergency crews have conducted numerous water rescues in the region, particularly in Kerr County, located about 90 miles northwest of San Antonio. Authorities have confirmed that a dozen people remain missing from Camp Mystic, a children’s summer camp situated in the hardest-hit area.

Among the deceased are at least 40 adults and 28 children. Officials report that 18 of the adult victims and 10 of the children have yet to be identified.

In response to the disaster, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Sunday in a post on X he has authorized the deployment of three swiftwater rescue teams from the Florida Division of Emergency Management. These teams are being sent under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) to assist Texas authorities with ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.

“We’re standing by to lend more help as requested,” DeSantis wrote in his post.

President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration for Kerr County on Sunday morning, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott visited the flooded summer campsite for the first time. The governor also expanded the federal disaster declaration to include additional counties impacted by the flooding.

Although Kerr County bore the brunt of the storm, fatalities have been confirmed in at least seven other Texas counties. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing, as officials continue to assess the full scope of the devastation.

The American Red Cross is actively working with local and national partners to assist affected families. In a statement, the organization expressed its condolences: “Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating impact of the recent floods in Texas. The loss of life and destruction are truly heartbreaking. We stand with the affected communities during this difficult time.”

The Red Cross is currently supporting emergency shelters and providing essential services such as food, relief supplies, financial assistance, and family travel aid to those displaced by the flooding.
