Meta has officially acquired Play AI, a startup known for developing artificial intelligence technology that generates natural-sounding human voices. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition, which Bloomberg first reported.
According to an internal memo cited in the report, the full Play AI team will begin working at Meta next week. The memo described Play AI’s work as “a great match” for Meta’s ongoing initiatives in artificial intelligence, particularly within areas such as AI Characters, Meta AI, wearable technology, and audio content creation.
The acquisition reflects Meta’s continued investment in cutting-edge AI tools and platforms. In recent months, the company has been actively expanding its AI capabilities through high-profile hires, including talent from OpenAI, and strategic partnerships. Notably, Meta recently struck a deal with Scale AI, with CEO Alexandr Wang joining Meta to lead a new team focused on artificial superintelligence.
While financial details of the Play AI acquisition were not made public, Bloomberg had previously reported that the two companies were in talks about a potential deal.
The move underscores Meta’s broader strategy to deepen its foothold in generative AI, particularly in the voice and audio space, as it competes with other tech giants pushing forward in AI-driven innovation.
