OpenAI appears to be quietly testing a new feature in ChatGPT called “Study Together,” according to reports from some subscribers who’ve noticed it in their available tools dropdown. Though not officially announced, the feature seems to be geared toward enhancing ChatGPT’s role as an educational companion.

Unlike traditional prompt-and-response interactions, “Study Together” reportedly shifts the dynamic by prompting users with questions instead of providing direct answers. Early speculation suggests this interactive mode may be OpenAI’s answer to Google’s LearnLM, encouraging deeper learning and critical thinking. Some users have even theorized that a collaborative version—allowing multiple users to join a shared study session—could be on the horizon.

OpenAI has not yet confirmed details about the tool or whether it will be widely available, or exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. When asked, ChatGPT itself noted: “OpenAI hasn’t officially announced when or if Study Together will be available to all users.”

The potential rollout comes as ChatGPT continues to impact education in complex ways. While many teachers use it for tasks like generating lesson plans and students benefit from its tutoring capabilities, concerns persist over academic integrity and AI-assisted cheating. A tool like “Study Together” could signal an effort by OpenAI to guide usage toward more constructive, learning-focused outcomes.

As the education sector grapples with how best to integrate AI, “Study Together” may represent a shift toward fostering collaboration and active engagement—rather than passive consumption of answers.
