The city of Orlando approved a contract this week to advance “The Canopy,” a $25-30 million project to revive the space under Interstate 4 in downtown Orlando into a place to socialize.

The space is set to bring in a “vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable urban oasis” near the Kia Center across from South Hughey Avenue, beneath I-4 from West Church Street to West Washington Avenue.

City officials detailed in a Facebook post on Thursday that “The Canopy” will “feature creative public art, shaded areas, and vibrant gathering spots where residents and visitors can relax, connect, and enjoy the city.”

This initiative is a part of the DTO Action Plan to make downtown Orlando a more walkable and welcoming city, and construction is set to finish by the end of August 2027, according to the post.
