Orlando International Airport (MCO) is advancing its commitment to technology-driven operations with the launch of a new biometric screening initiative aimed at improving the passenger experience and enhancing security. In partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), MCO is rolling out the Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) program to expedite identity verification for international arrivals.
The new program utilizes facial biometric comparison to confirm the identities of U.S. citizens by matching real-time photos to passport images already on file with CBP. The goal is to optimize CBP’s efficiency by automating identity verification, allowing officers to focus more on traveler engagement and less on administrative tasks.
“Technology is driving the way for more efficient passenger operations,” Lance Lyttle, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) said in a press release. “Innovative programs like EPP can significantly reduce processing times for passengers, without compromising security. MCO saw an increase of more than 800,000 international arrivals in 2024 than in 2023, many of them U.S. citizens who would benefit from this program. We deeply value our partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and thank them for their continued collaboration and support in helping us deliver a more seamless and secure experience for our international travelers.”
To support the initiative, GOAA has partnered with iProov, a leading provider of biometric identity solutions. The company brings a track record of successful deployments in border security technology.
“Building on our strong relationships with key border agencies and the proven success of our on-the-move biometric screening, iProov is excited to support Orlando International Airport on EPP,” Andrew Bud, founder and CEO, iProov, said. “Our biometric screening enhances the ability to accelerate international arrival processing while maintaining confidence in the identity of the individual.”
Under the EPP system, arriving U.S. citizens will have their photos captured upon entry. These images are automatically matched against their passport records stored in CBP databases. Once verified, travelers can proceed directly to baggage claim. While CBP officers remain available for interaction, the majority of the identity confirmation process is automated.
Participation in the program is voluntary. Those who choose not to use facial comparison technology may opt for the standard identity verification process with a CBP officer. There is no cost or need for pre-registration.
The EPP program will initially be available on select flights at MCO, with full deployment anticipated before the peak summer travel season. The launch is part of a broader collaboration between GOAA and CBP to implement cutting-edge solutions that improve airport operations while maintaining stringent security standards.
