Thousands of Central Florida residents assembled along Magnolia Avenue for a night of cultural celebration at the Downtown Arts District’s 17th annual “Dia de los Muertos and Monster Event,” on Thursday, October 15.
The Downtown Arts District is a nonprofit organization focused on the advancement of arts and economic development in Orlando. The Arts District produces signature events including the monthly 3rd Thursday Gallery Hop, Día de los Muertos, and the Orlando Story Club. It also manages and operates CityArts Orlando, a multi‑use arts and cultural destination located in the historic Rogers‑Kiene Building.
The event showcased Day of the Dead and Halloween-inspired art created by regional, national, and international artists inside CityArts.
Accompanying the art gallery was a street party, featuring unique food and art vendors, face painting, and exciting live musical and visual performances.
Barbara Hartley, Executive Director of the Downtown Arts District, said the event is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for the district.
“It’s an incredible celebration of art, culture and community that brings so many people together in the heart of Downtown Orlando,” Hartley said. “There’s something exciting around every corner.”
This night also serves as a great opportunity for local artists, like Carlos Granela, to show off their work.
“The city of Orlando allows for a great platform for artists to show their art,” Granela said.
Granela’s art celebrates Mexican ancestral heritage through traditional imagery and cultural symbolism.
“This is what most people recognize,” Granela said. “They see it as a way to honor the dead and their ancestors while celebrating life through the explosive colors I use in my artwork.”
Through traditional imagery, vibrant artwork, and cultural symbolism, the event serves as a reminder of how cultural traditions can be preserved and shared with new audiences through art and community celebration.
