This is an extra special one for me as it’s all about the vibrant beauty and oftentimes challenging realities of growing up on an island.

Join Whippoorwill Beer House on Sunday, 8/24 as we go on a culinary tour of the islands of the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans, guided by Von Diaz’s expertly crafter “Islas: A Celebration of Tropical Cooking.”

This is more than a cookbook. It’s a beautiful love letter to the ingenuity and resilience of generations upon generations of islanders all across the globe. It shines a light on the generosity of spirit that is inherent to island life and celebrates islanders who have to make do with what little they have while still making sure there’s enough to go around for everyone, even in the face of scarcity.

This book made me very nostalgic for places I’ve yet to visit as I discovered countless historical, cultural, and culinary traditions that I myself grew up with in Cabo Verde, despite being oceans apart from many of the island nations highlighted in the book.
