Theatre South Playhouse is bringing “Matilda the Musical” back to Orlando this November for a new production of the beloved Roald Dahl story.

The musical will run November 6-22, at Theatre South Playhouse in Dr. Phillips. Tickets are now on sale for the 15-performance run.

The production marks the third time the Theatre South Playhouse has presented the musical, following sold-out runs in 2019 and 2023. This year’s production will offer a fresh take on the story in the theater’s immersive space.

A New Take on ‘Matilda’

Based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, “Matilda” follows an extraordinary young girl with a vivid imagination and sharp mind who decides to stand up for herself and challenge the people who underestimate her.

The musical combines Dahl’s humor and mischievous storytelling with music and choreography as Matilda discovers her own ability to change her circumstances.

Theatre South Playhouse Executive and Artistic Director Hillary Brook will direct the production. Brook’s previous Theatre South Playhouse directing credits include “Ride the Cyclone,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Annie,” “Spring Awakening,” “Urinetown,” and “School of Rock.”

Sterling Lovett is the production’s choreographer, with his choreography being restaged by Chris Payen. Seth Durbin serves as musical director.

Local favorite Jonny Jones will return to Theatre South Playhouse as Miss Trunchbull, following previous appearances in productions including “Annie,” “Matilda,” “Urinetown,” and “The Prom.” The cast will also feature young actors from throughout the Orlando area.

Rather than relying on projections or special effects, the production will put its focus on the performers.

“Our production will not be a carbon copy of the Broadway or other regional productions out there. This will be a fresh take on the show without the use of any projections or special effects,” Brook said. “All of the magic will be found within our remarkable cast!”
