This summer, the awkward, hilarious, and heartfelt trials of middle school return to the stage as Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Musical makes its much-anticipated comeback—this time with the spotlight squarely on young performers. Presented by Orlando Family Stage’s Youth Academy, the musical will run from July 18 through 25, featuring a full youth cast bringing the beloved story to life in a fresh, expanded production.
Adapted from Jeff Kinney’s bestselling book series, the musical follows the misadventures of Greg Heffley as he navigates the ups and downs of adolescence. Following a successful professional run earlier this season tailored to school-day audiences, this summer’s youth-performed version promises a deeper dive into the story, with more characters, scenes, and laughs.
“I used to read the books and it’s been AMAZING re-creating the story onstage!” Youth Academy student Alayna F., who plays Claire said in a press release. “It’s so professional and everyone is very supportive and they push us to do our best. I’ve made great friendships and this is an incredible experience I’ll never forget.”
The Orlando Family Stage Youth Academy production stands out for its commitment to high production values and mentorship. Young performers rehearse and perform alongside professional directors, choreographers, and designers, gaining real-world experience in a supportive, collaborative environment.
“I have met so many amazing people here. Being in a professional musical for the first time is the best. Learning new skills with awesome directors is an experience I’ll never forget,” Gabe C., who is entering ninth grade said.
Some students like Andrea R. are making their theatre debut.
“This was my first professional theatre show, and I never expected the cast to be so kind and helpful with giving me tips about the show. I also didn’t expect the cheese touch to go around the cast,” Andrea R. said.
Director Jenn Adams-Carrasquillo emphasized the value of youth collaboration in the creative process.
“There’s something extraordinary about young people creating alongside one another,” she said. “They lift each other up, reflect each other’s strengths, and often help one another see talents they didn’t know they had. That shared journey is where confidence grows and potential is realized.”
The musical is one of three major Youth Academy productions staged annually by Orlando Family Stage, which offers an expansive education program that includes after-school classes, school break workshops, and summer camps aimed at developing creativity, confidence, and collaboration in young people.
“This is my second year doing a Youth Academy show at OFS,” Landon H said. “I had so much fun last year that I knew I had to come back. I love the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, and the idea of being in a musical version of it sounded so fun. I’ve had so much fun so far!”
In 2025 alone, more than 1,000 students will participate in Orlando Family Stage summer camps, which are held at multiple locations across Central Florida, including Loch Haven Park, UCF’s main campus, Maitland, Dr. Phillips, and The Villages.
“Young people rise when they’re both nurtured and challenged,” Adams-Carrasquillo said. “In our rehearsal spaces, we create an environment where students feel safe enough to take risks and strong enough to reach new heights. That’s where real growth happens, as performers and as people.”
