The Biggest Secret at the Augusta National

As thousands of golfing fans make their way to the hallowed grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia this month, there will be one secret that is not open to deciphering. The secret has nothing to do with the game itself, and more to do with the popular concession stands at the tournament.

For years, golf aficionados at the Augusta National championships have made their way to the public concession stands, especially to get their hands on one of the simple, unassuming green packages, containing a revered culinary legend: the $1.50 Pimento Cheese Sandwich. These sandwiches have received iconic status among the throngs of golfing fans that make the pilgrimage to the championships every year.

Recent years have seen more than some controversy related to the quality of the sandwiches, specifically changes in the formulation of the cheese inside. Golfing fans have not been amused. You see Augusta National fans take their Pimento Cheese sandwiches very seriously, especially the taste and texture of the cheese that is the piece de la resistance of the sandwich.

However, what exactly goes into this legendary cheese? No one is saying, least of all the persons who bring these culinary masterpieces to fans every year. However, they will tell you this: The secret lies in the unassuming quality of the recipe.  The cheese is simple, just like good food should be. Everyone agrees, however, that the Pimento cheese at the Augusta National simply cannot be beat.

Or perhaps, the magic of the cheese is to be found at the location. Biting into a rich pimento cheese sandwich, as you walk around the hallowed grounds of the National, simply has its own magic and that, we think, is its secret.
