Billy Wilder directed and produced this 1959 romantic comedy film starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. According to Filmsite.org, “’Some Like It Hot’ is one of the most hilarious, raucous films ever made.” It was “the all-time highest-grossing comedy up to its time, one of the most successful films of 1959, and Wilder’s funniest comedy in his career.” The film is also notable for featuring cross-dressing and for playing with the idea of homosexuality, which led to it being produced without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code even though the code had been gradually weakening during the early 1950s due to increasing social tolerance for previously taboo topics. The overwhelming success of “Some Like It Hot” was a final nail in the coffin for the Hays Code. This film received six Academy Award nominations: Best Actor (Jack Lemmon), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best b/w Art Direction/Set Decoration—with its sole Oscar awarded for Best b/w Costume Design (for costumes including Marilyn Monroe’s shimmering gowns).
